One of the unexpected joys of the fediverse over other places is the addition of weird domains appended on to everyone's usernames.

It makes the web feel like more than just four websites again.

It's both a signal of a smaller more intimate internet and also a larger and far more diverse internet at the same time!

For new people wondering why Mastodon is on thousands of servers instead of one:

-It helps protect us all against Elon Musk scenarios. It's very difficult for anyone to buy a network made of thousands of independently owned servers. (It's the same reason why no one owns the world's email network, because there are so many independent providers out there.)

-If your server misbehaves (or sells out to a malevolent billionaire), you can move your account to a different server, or even to a brand new server. Decentralisation means you're never trapped on a site you hate.

-Mastodon is an open platform where anyone can start their own server, and they don't need tech knowledge if they use a service like masto.host or federation.spacebear.ee

...and there are lots more good reasons too, to do with servers using alternative Fediverse software etc, but I'll save that for a future post 😁

I love /r/antiwork but I really don't like the name.

It should be /r/antijob.

Human nature is to do work.

But human nature is not to have a job.

Building software is work. Gardening is work. Making music is work.

Work is good. Work is healthy.

Jobs, though. That's where our mental, emotional, and often even physical selves break down.

Someone saw my bike and asked if I do any long group rides and I responded without thinking, "Oh, no, I'm normal." 🤦

To help some of the newcomers make connections: name 5-7 things that interest you but aren't in your profile, as tags so they are searchable. Then boost this post or repeat its instructions so others know to do the same.

I had to drive in heavy rain this morning and did not see egregiously bad driving. San Antonio is changing so fast... we don't know what we've lost until it's gone...

Recently made my usual split pea soup but added a jar of kimchi to great effect

Thanks for the advice, @cassolotl!

Don't forget to boost good posts with hashtags so that searchable posts make it out to more instances!

I grew up in the country and did my driving test in a Chevy Suburban. A girl I dated in college had a Mini Cooper and let me drive it and it was so much more fun. This doesn't really mean anything, it's just very funny to me. I felt like I was driving a bumper car around town

Thank you for participating in the Mastodon Beta (codename "Twitter").

Over the past 10 years, we've collected valuable data that we can now use to improve the experience of the main platform and it's users. Without your hard work and dedicated shitposting, none of this would be possible. We're glad that you've decided to join us here on the final iteration, and hope you enjoy the new and refined experience!

A few years ago I made this flow chart of which Mastodon posts end up in which timelines!

So, you can see how each instance will have a different local timeline, and even a slightly different federated timeline - and you can see why the federated timeline moves so much faster than the local one, too.

This is why it's important to boost good posts and use hashtags - the fediverse is fragmented and harder to search by nature.

FYI for newbies

Twitter has algorithms to get you engaged. Mastodon does not. So in order to enjoy Mastodon you have to take some time to reach out and find content and follow folks that you enjoy. Don't expect Mastodon to send you random popular posts to keep you engaged, you have to curate your own feed. But this is good! It gives you control.

ever since the news of Elon Musk purchasing Twitter broke, the number of OSHA violations at Twitter HQ has jumped 480%. people are somehow now having forklift and welding accidents left and right.

also, news is now coming out that the 2022 quota for posts will not be met and most tweets will actually ship in Q3 of 2024.
